Thanks Liz! The drink was developed in the first year of the war. Crazy to think about life in Paris in '15 with the war raging not too far outside the city, yet life went on, drinks were made.
Ted, according to wikipedia: The drink was created in 1915 at the Paris landmark, Harry's New York Bar by barman Harry MacElhone. The combination was said to have such a kick that it felt like being shelled with the powerful French 75mm field gun.
Beautiful drink and a classic! Not sure but I wonder if the name hearkens from WW1? Perhaps a gun used in that war: French 75 mm howitzer. Must look it up.
